96 Points - James Halliday
Nestled in Hahndorf in the heart of the cool-climate Adelaide Hills, Sidewood is the largest certified sustainable winery in the region. Wines are made at their state-of-the-art winery by the highly acclaimed Darryl Catlin, who was previously a winemaker at Shaw and Smith.
The 2022 Sidewood Adelaide Hills Shiraz is crafted from twelve distinct estate-grown clones, which were matured in French oak for 18 months. This result is a brilliant example of the popular style, which is already receiving widespread praise for its quality and value-for-money.
A beautifully aromatic and approachable Shiraz with impressive depth of flavour, the palate is packed with juicy blackberry, dark cherry and pomegranate flavours. With soft silky tannins, savoury notes and subtle French oak influence providing further complexity. At this price, Adelaide Hills Shiraz doesn't get any better.
"96 Points. Fashioned from 12 different estate-grown clones, fermented in small batches (for those clones) partial wild yeast and extended maceration, matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new), ultimately a barrel selection. Black cherries are at the centre of this beautifully poised wine. It's a first-class wine at an incredibly low price. $26. 14% alc. Drink: 2024 - 2042. Screwcap"- James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion.
"96 Points. A vibrant red in the glass with a nose of black plum that is supported by pepper, charcuterie and earth. The palate is more old world than new with savoury, meat and earth characters masterfully integrated with concentrated but balanced dark berry fruits. There is a twist of spice and richness that adds dimension to the mid palate before tannins that have a touch of pepper and iodine like influence bring things to a close. Drinking well now and will cellar. Incredible value as always."- Patrick Eckel, winereviewer.com.au
"94 Points. An impressive estate wine that comes from a serious amount of detailed work in the vineyards across the Hills - for a start 12 separate clones that bring a range of complex characters into play before 18 months maturation in larger oak formats, 30% new. The red to crimson fruit profile is perfectly sweet and spicy, the latter a sprinkling of ground white pepper. Medium bodied with a decent presence of tannins in the mouthfeel, the wine is neatly balanced and structured. Most desirable, and terrific value in terms of its detail. $26."- Tony Love, Wine Pilot.
