96 Points - James Halliday | Last Stocks
The Portsea Estate vineyard is located on the century old Tintagel property overlooking Bass Strait at the very tip of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula. The free draining, limestone rich soils provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay to thrive and help produce complex, layered wines of distinct character and minerality.
The single vineyard, single clone Portsea Estate Birthday Hill Pinot Noir is only produced in "perfect vintages" with fruit hand selected from the best sites in Portsea Estate's vineyards .
With only 200 cases produced, the 2018 Portsea Estate Birthday Hill Pinot Noir was 100% whole bunch fermented, with the ripe, lignified stems creating a wine of immense character, aromatic lift and structure. The nose is dark chocolate, dense brooding red berry fruits, cloves, liquorice, hints of carbonic smokiness and cardamom spice.
"96 Points. A small parcel from a close-planted, low-yielding vineyard, fermented with 100% whole bunches, 900 bottles made. An exceptional pinot from an exceptional hatful of vines. Everything - fruit, tannins, oak and acidity - are in harmonious balance. 13.6% alc. Drink by 2030. Screwcap"- James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au.
