95 Points - Philip Rich
Giant Steps has forged a reputation as one of the Yarra Valley's leading wineries, with their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay consistently among the nation's finest examples.
The 2021 Giant Steps Yarra Valley Chardonnay follows in the footsteps of recent vintages of this wine that have proved hugely popular. This is again an incredibly delicious Yarra Valley Chardonnay packed with white peach, fresh melons flavours and a citrus edge, supported by well integrated, quality French oak (90% old). A perennial favourite, this new release is sure to again be hugely popular.
"95 Points. Whole-bunched pressed into older French puncheons. Natural fermentation and zero mlf. A super-bright green gold. Vibrant aromas with perfectly ripened stone fruits, grapefruit pith and an attractive touch of lemongrass and ginger. Gently textured, balanced and satisfying. A class act from beginning to end. $38. 12.5% alc. Drink by: 2025"- Philip Rich, winecompanion.com.au.
"94 Points. A blend of Sexton, Tarraford, Applejack, Primavera and Wombat Creek vineyards. 15% new oak (puncheons). About 10% malo. In other news, Mel Chester (ex Seppelt, Sutton Grange) is the incoming winemaker at Giant Steps, while Steve Flamsteed involves himself in special ops for GS, among other things. Flavour, crunch, gloss, and all up a Chardonnay of fine balance and appeal. White peach, almond, a little fennel and lime, fine acidity, flinty texture, a cool cucumber thing happening, and clean, with a well-defined finish of excellent length. Very good in 2021. Tasted: Jan22 12.5% alc. $40 Screwcap Drink: 2022 - 2027" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
