99 Points - Ken Gargett
Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon has firmly entrenched itself as one of Australia's finest red wines, and their annual release is always one of the most anticipated and demanded of the year.
The 2019 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is already attracting plenty of attention and high praise (99 Points - Ken Gargett, 98 Points - Sam Kim). Another typically concentrated and complex Margaret River Cabernet; dark fruits, blackcurrant, blueberry and licorice flavours are all in abundant supply on the palate. Bright acidity and well measured oak combine beautifully on the long finish to round off another classic Moss Wood Cabernet release.
Moss Wood believe the 2019 vintage "sits right near the top of the Moss Wood quality tree" with plenty of cellaring potential. A release that's already receiving plenty of attention, we expect our limited remaining stocks to go quickly.
"99 Points. 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, this is elegance personified. A low yielding and slightly cooler vintage, the grapes went into small open tanks for fermentation, with thrice daily hand-plunging. 15 days on skins and then pressed to tank before it was racked to French oak, 15% new. Over two years maturation. As mentioned, elegance personified. A silky combination of coiled power and finesse, this is a glorious Cabernet. Blackberries, spices, tobacco leaves, kid leather, violets, cigar box notes, aniseed and delicately integrated oak. There is a gossamer-like web of complexity weaving through the wine. Seamless, great length and cashmere tannins. This is a brilliant wine. Ten years, twenty years? How long have you got? If you are serious about great Australian Cabernet, this is a must for your cellar. $160. Drink: 2022 - 2042."- Ken Gargett, winepilot.com.
"98 Points. Gracefully powerful and exquisitely expressed, the wine shows blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedary oak, green olive and warm spice aromas on the nose. The concentrated palate delivers outstanding fruit purity and intensity, combined with finely textured mouthfeel and beautifully pitched grainy tannins, finishing with a great line and length. Impeccably detailed, precise and undeniably classy."- Sam Kim, Wine Orbit, April 2022.
"97 Points. This is a masterclass in refinement. It is svelte and streamlined, the cool, mineral spool of flavour across the tongue is what the 2019 vintage can look like at its most restrained and harnessed. The length of flavour basically flutters out over the finish, so weightless and enduring. The 2018 that came before it had a thundering, legendary quality - legs widespread, hands on hips, power pose. This is the creative in the family, the quiet guy. It's intriguing and intelligent and thoughtful ... poignantly red fruited, spicy and super-supple. I'm descending into hyperbole. It's unnecessary. This is another great Moss Wood release. $170. 14% alc. Drink by 2042. Screwcap"- Erin Larkin, Halliday Wine Companion 2023.
"96 Points. Fine-boned, linear cabernet sauvignon with dark berry, violet, dark chocolate, cedar, new leather and spicy oak flavours. It’s a perfectly-balanced wine with obvious cellaring potential. A complex wine with underlying power."- Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review.
