When Gerald Ellis started planting vines on his sheep farm high in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley back in 1976, conventional wisdom said you couldn’t grow grapes in the cold wilds of Tasmania. Today the vineyard is considered one of Tasmania's most important and renowned vineyards.
With a long history of supplying grapes to some of Tasmania's biggest names, including House of Arras and Bay of Fires, Meadowbank's winemaking fortunes were boosted in 2015, with the arrival of the much heralded Peter Dredge as winemaker.
Today Meadowbank is considered one of the jewels of Tasmanian winemaking, which are headlined by their racy dry Riesling, a pristine cool-climate Chardonnay, and the always sublime Pinot Noir. Meadowbank's Gamay is also attracting plenty of recent attention and is quickly establishing a massive following.
