97 Points - James Halliday
One of Australia's true winemaking treasures, Mount Mary was a key driver in the rebirth of the Yarra Valley in the early 1970's after nearly 50 years without viticultural activity. Today, in the words of James Halliday, "its star shines brighter than that of any of the 174 wineries in the valley".
This 2019 Mount Mary Pinot Noir is another remarkable Yarra Valley Pinot Noir, with wonderful aromatics, purity of fruit flavours, balance and a subtle depth and complexity. A wine that is already receiving plenty of attention, this will not last long.
“97 Points. A fragrant, perfumed bouquet and palate with cherry plum and berry fruit has hallmark length; French oak (25% new) and ultra-fine tannins give it a beguiling complexity; the spices will build over years to come. 13% alc; cork, drink to 2034.”- James Halliday, Weekend Australian, May 2021.
“96 Points. The light ruby hue belies the whorl of intense flavour. Pretty aromatics. It bursts out with raspberries and cherries, then richer strawberry compote infused with bitter herbs, cloves and sarsaparilla. French oak is neatly tucked away, but acts as a support, while superfine tannins glide across a lighter- to medium-bodied frame. A beautiful and beguiling wine.”- Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion 2022.
