"Absolutely delightful" - Winsor Dobbin | RRP $30
The native Austrian variety of Gruner Veltliner continues to attract plenty of attention in Australia with Longview of the Adelaide Hills one winery leading the charge. This 2020 Longview Macclesfield Grüner Veltliner offers plenty of subtle grapefruit, pear and earthy peppery notes on the nose. The palate is personality-packed; nicely textured with mineral characters, citrus notes and impressive depth. A white wine of excellent food appeal, our very limited remaining stocks will not last long.
"Gruner Veltliner, the spicy white wine standout from Austria, is making itself very much at home in the Adelaide Hills - and this is one of the best yet. Grown on the immaculately tended Macclesfield vineyards of the Saturno family on the southern edge of the Hills, this is among the best Australian gruners yet. It is poised and intense with both citrus and white stone fruit flavours and some fresh ground pepper notes with pebbly minerality on the finish. Absolutely delightful. $30."- Winsor Dobbin, wdwineoftheweek.blogspot.com.
"Gruner veltliner (pronounced velt-lee-ner, velt-linner, or velt-line-r, preferably the former but commonly the latter) from 11-year-old vines. Taut, controlled, focussed and intense. Beautiful wine. The Adelaide Hills is caning it with this variety. Crunchy green pears, seaspray, spice, a certain positive smokiness. Fantastic to drink now but will be fascinating to see how it travels over the next few years. 93 Points Tasted: Jan21 12.5% alc. $30 Screwcap Drink: 2021 - 2025"- Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
Longview is located on the South Eastern Ridge of the Mt Lofty Ranges and to the south has the southern ocean and to the east Lake Alexandrina. This accounts for a slightly higher average temperature than the rest of the Adelaide Hills while still remaining a cool-climate site.
Most rainfall occurs in winter and throughout summer warm days are followed by cool winds shifting from the southern waters of Lake Alexandrina and the coast. Consequently these conditions result in a very high diurnal range which is quite site specific, ensuring a breadth of flavours and aromatics in the grape berry.
Longview wines are all from its single estate and therefore much of the work to provide depth and character is completed in the vineyard. Each block is serviced differently, in order to build complex flavour profiles which are then fermented separately and blended to make the wine of any one vintage. With a site perfect for Macclesfield’s unique micro-climate, Longview Vineyard produces exceptional flavoursome, graceful cool climate wines.
Longview's Yakka Shiraz has become synonymous for high quality Adelaide Hills Shiraz, as has their Whippet Sauvignon Blanc, which is always one of the leading examples from the Adelaide Hills. Other standouts from Longview are their high quality Cabernet Sauvignon while in recent times their Gruner Veltliner has marked itself as one of Australia's most promising examples of this native Austrian white wine variety.
