96 Points - Jeni Port
Nestled on an elevated site in the picturesque Beechworth of northeastern Victoria, Savaterre sits among the region's most acclaimed winemakers. Located across the road from Giaconda, this close-planted vineyard sits on ancient granitic soils at 440 metres above sea level.
Owner and winemaker Keppell Smith discovered this special site in 1996 and is focused on crafting outstanding, individualistic wines far removed from the mainstream. Looking to the winemaking and viticulture of the Old World, particularly Burgundy as his inspiration.
The 2024 Savaterre Pinot Noir is another sublime Beechworth Pinot Noir, which is being proclaimed as one of their finest releases to date. Opening with notes of red cherry, raspberry, white truffle and exotic spices. With a distinct "Burgundian" influence, fine tannin and impressive length, this is already attracting plenty of admirers.
"96 Points. A little more open, a little more aromatic, a little more immediately inviting than the previous release, which is good news for those impatient wine drinkers among us. Lifted and beautifully perfumed in rose petal and violet aromas, red berries, raspberry, blood orange pith and aromatic dried herbs. Comes together in perfect sync, integrated in fine tannins, with small red berries, herbs and aromatics on show and a freshness of acidity that pulses and brightens the whole experience. But, yes, for those not impatient, be assured it's got a decade in it, easy. $100. 13.5% alc. Drink: 2026 - 2036. Screwcap"- Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion.
"95+ Points. It’s very Beechworth and very Savaterre. Raspberry, cherry, wet leaves, dried rose, cedar and spice, with a some cut red capsicum and smoked paprika, or maybe Lapsang souchong tea. It’s medium-bodied, a little sappy and meaty, red fruits and spice, a beetroot earthiness to it, a crisp feel with light smoky and grainy tannin, finishing with excellent length and a twist of orange peel and ginger. Compelling and individual. It’s a really good wine. Tasted: Apr26. 13.5% alc. $100. Screwcap. Drink: 2027 - 2038+"- Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
