William Downie is one of the nation's most highly regarded winemakers and a leading exponent of Pinot Noir in Australia. This latest addition to the William Downie range of wines is made from a blend of grapes grown in Victoria's Upper Goulburn, King and Alpine Valleys and Mornington Peninsula.
An instantly appealing young Pinot, the 2024 William Downie Cathedral Pinot Noir opens with bright aromas of red and blue berries, red petals and herbs. Light and juicy, with a core of raspberry, cranberry and pomegranate, soft and silken tannins, and notes of violets, delicate spices and pink pepper on the long finish. A Pinot Noir of wide appeal, this is ready to be enjoyed now.
"93 Points. At least the suite of ’24 pinots turned up even if no information came with them. I do know Cathedral is made from fruit off several vineyards across the state. This is a tip-top offering - not too much of anything, just a balance of cherry fruit and pips, chinotto, wood spices and woodsmoke, a little autumnal too. Lovely perfume. Mid-weighted at best, the tannins supple, the acidity cleansing, and there’s good texture. A nice intro to the pinot world, according to Bill. Drink: 2025 - 2032. $34. 13.5% alc. Screwcap"- Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion.
"This is a step up from the 2023 release and is pretty handy value. It features lots of leaf matter and twiggy herb/spice notes but then the fruit is confident, smoky, succulent and well sustained. There’s a prettiness to this, and a meatiness, and a rush of rose petal-like characters, in there among the cherries. Tannin is al dente and sheeted. I’d buy/ drink this again. 92 Points Tasted: Jun25 13.5% alc. $33. Diam Drink: 2025 - 2030"- Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
