96 Points - Huon Hooke
Josef Chromy is one of Tasmania's most famous influential wine figures, having owned and developed some of the state's most prominent wineries, including Rochecombe (now Bay Of Fires), Jansz, Tamar Ridge and Heemskerk vineyards. In 2007 he established the winery that would bear his name, which quickly became one of Tasmania's leading wine producers.
Always one of Tasmania's leading Pinot Noir makers, the highly acclaimed 2021 Josef Chromy Estate Pinot Noir is crafted from grapes grown on Chromy's estate vineyard at Relbia, northern Tasmania. A fuller-bodied style Pinot Noir with excellent concentration, this is bursting with vibrant cherry and raspberry flavours and a silky mouthfeel. With subtle oak, refreshing acidity and a long balanced finish, this is an ultra impressive Pinot release from Josef Chromy.
"96 Points. Tasmanian pinot noir has really come of age in the last few vintages. All the grapes came from the estate vineyard at Relbia. Chief winemaker is Ockie Myburgh. Deep-ish red-purple colour; lots of smoked charcuterie in the complex aroma, also showing dark cherry and blackberry fruit and the flavour is deep and concentrated on the palate, powerful and elegant, very varietal and stylish with precision, drive and persistence. Impressive pinot, which will also reward a little more cellaring. (Screwcap) 13.5% alc. Ageing: now to 2036. Food: barbecued duck breast"- Huon Hooke, The Real Review, January 22, 2024.
"94 Points. A bright cherry hue with aromas of black cherry, plum, exotic spice, licorice, berry turnover and ample stalky nuance. Textured and mouth-filling with powerful yet graceful deep-spiced cherry and plum fruits with hints of earth and game. Almost burgundian in its demeanour, with a gentle tug of fine tannin lending support and structure and a finish flush with pure fruit, spice and earth. Drink: 2023 - 2028"- Dave Brookes, winecompanion.com.au.
