Tar & Roses focuses on wines inspired by classic varietals of the Mediterranean. The name derives from the signature characteristics of Nebbiolo, while also ties back to the winemaking team behind the venture, the legendary late Don Lewis and Narelle King.
The grapes for the 2024 Tar & Roses Heathcote Shiraz come from two main vineyards, one off the deep red Cambrian soil, the other from tougher more gravelly ground. The first gives rich, chocolatey and earthy flavours whilst the other has more highly fragrant notes with good acid and sweet fruit.
"There's a familiarity here which is quite infectious, a scent, a taste of the Aussie bush that to some might seem a little intrusive. Eucalypt, briar, autumn leaves and earth all mix harmoniously together with blackberry, bramble, aniseed and baking spices. It's warm and all-embracing with sweet vanilla and chocolate notes to close. This is accessible and ready to be enjoyed at a smart price. 91 Points"- Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion, February 2025.
