Wild Duck Creek is a highly acclaimed, family-owned and operated winery in Victoria's Heathcote wine region. Founded by winemaker David 'Duck' Anderson in the late 1970's, Wild Duck Creek received international attention when their 1997 'Duck Muck' was awarded a 99 point review by American wine critic Robert Parker. This Parker review propelled Wild Duck Creek on to the world stage, while also significantly raising the profile of the Heathcote wine region.
Springflat Shiraz is Wild Duck Creek's original flagship wine, which has been made every vintage since 1991. A blend of 5 distinct estate grown vineyards throughout Heathcote region, the parcels of fruit are made separately, utilising a small amount of whole bunches in the ferments for added texture. Hand plunged, basket pressed and then matured in French and American oak hogsheads for up to 22 months, 40% of which are new.
"It’s a pretty lusty wine here. Thick set in its way, concentrated, very inky, chunky and pudgy with a rolling feast of forest berry compote, Black Forest cake, liquorice, sweet pipe tobacco, honey-glazed cashew and faint, flinty elements. As so often with WDC wines, the projected heat of the alcohol percentage just doesn’t seem to happen, the finish, a touch short perhaps, but a plush plume of sweet fruit and sweet spice that finds curious freshness and levity. This wine delivers massive in a balletic way. 93 Points
