One of Australia’s most talented and celebrated winemakers, Luke Lambert consistently produces a stunning array of Yarra Valley wines. With a minimal-intervention style, Lambert believes the personality of the wine should be dictated by its place.
We recently welcomed very limited stocks of the highly anticipated 2023 Lambert Yarra Valley Nebbiolo, which has established itself as an Australian benchmark. Lambert’s Nebbiolo block sits halfway up Denton’s northwestern slope, catching all available sunshine. The soils here - granitic sand over granite bedrock - provide a unique terroir for the Yarra and Nebbiolo, which in Luke’s words “always contributes plenty of bright red fruit and floral perfume along with gun-flint, graphite characters typical of a granitic soil profile”.
According to Luke, the “excellent growing season gave us a long and slow finish to the Nebbiolo harvest with very good hang time.” The wine itself is a touch riper, and the fruit flavours a darker shade of red compared to the most recent releases. The 2023 Lambert Nebbiolo stands out with its powerful elegance and complexity. Dark cherry and raspberry aromas are enhanced by savory tar and roasted meats. Supple tannins support rich black cherry and asphalt flavours. Exceptional length and balance define this superb Aussie Nebbiolo, which Luke recommends decanting if approached in the short-term.
