Limited Stocks | 97 Points - Philip Rich
One of Australia's true winemaking treasures, Mount Mary was a key driver in the rebirth of the Yarra Valley in the early 1970's after nearly 50 years without viticultural activity. Today, in the words of James Halliday, "its star shines brighter than that of any of the 174 wineries in the valley".
The 2023 Mount Mary Chardonnay is another stunning example of Yarra Valley Chardonnay from that's already attracting plenty of deserving attention. As always, only very limited stocks are available, which will go quickly.
“97 Points. 20% whole-bunch pressed, the balance crushed and d-estemmed. Matured in French puncheons and barriques (30% new) for 11 months. A concentrated Mount Mary Chardonnay where the volume has been turned up in ‘23! An intense bouquet of white peach, confit lemon, fresh vanilla bean and oyster shells. There’s a lot going on and this follows perfectly onto the mouth-filling, powerful, structured and harmonious palate. This will give pleasure for at least 10 if not 15-plus years”- Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion.
“98 Points. Fine cedar, pithy white grapefruit, lemon butter, and white nectarine rise from the glass before present-but-integrated flint and almond meal build into the wine, adding savoury appeal. Some time in the glass unlocks salted cashew, along with mineral finesse and lift that shoots through the aromatic core while attaching to the flintiness. The palate has remarkable impact, balancing weight and tension with a gorgeous, supple texture wrapping around white peach, lime skin, flint, almond cream, fine cedar, and saline. Not to labour the point, but the texture here is flawless and eminently attractive – such density and concentration, while brilliantly focused and defined. The phenolics are tight and chalky, putting a corset around the power, and the length is seemingly endless. A remarkable expression of this iconic Yarra Valley terroir.”- Tom Kline, Inside Burgundy.
