Put simply, this is one of Australia’s greatest wines, year after year, and one of only a handful that can be reliably called world class, without hesitation. It is also one of the world’s very best Shiraz Viognier blends, happily sitting beside the best from Cote Rotie. From a cool year, their third in a row, the blend is 94% Shiraz and 6% Viognier. 22% of the Shiraz was whole bunches and that was co-fermented with the Viognier, via wild yeasts. For maturation, the wine went into French oak barrels, both puncheons and barriques, with one-third of them new. It’s buoyant, juicy and perfumed, with a wild party of spice notes flying through the wine like happiness itself, or like confetti, either way there’s an air here of celebration. This wine sits on the apex of the road, where the rain meets the oil. The fruit flavours have a water-colour aspect; the texture coats the flavour in satin. We’ve come to expect all the above from Clonakilla’s flagship wine. What’s special, for me, in this 2023 release is the web of tannin, as dewy as it is strong. There’s a weave to this release. Fermentation was in a mix of stainless steel vats and larger format wooden foudre. The team incorporated 15% of whole bunches in the fermentation, which took eighteen days. The wine was pressed into French oak barriques, 15% new, for maturation over the next eleven months. A pale but vibrant crimson, with hints of the Blue Mountains haze. The nose offers notes of strawberries and cherries, chocolate, bay leaves, dried herbs and a touch of vanilla. Good focus, there is quite a creamy texture here, and we do see some early complexity. Interesting that vine age is from 5 to 32 years of age, likely due to some new clones being included in the mix. The clonal selection is MV6, 114, 115, DSV12, Mariafeldt (a Swiss clone), and 777. 25% new oak. 15% whole bunch. Harvested from the 13th to the 24th of March. Look at me trying to be all grown up with my introductions! Cherry, raspberry, quite spicy, a light charcoal character here too, along with some dried rose and amaro herb perfume, and light cedar/vanilla oak. It’s medium-bodied, quite firm in tannin, spicy and slightly nutty, with a fresh and twiggy finish of excellent length. In particular, I like the cool sort of ‘mineral’ character it offers. In 2023, this is yet another super-serious and stunningly deep wine. The perfume is elevated, the palate is dense and regal, and the finish is initially ostentatious, then, at once, becomes contemplative and sage-like. Very dry, fine and hard, this is a classic example of a powerful wine that will drink well in its youth and then follow the two-decade RunRig mantra without missing a beat. I went back to my empty glass an hour later, and it was still utterly incredible. I would give it a higher score if I could, but 2023 RunRig will have to live with another perfect twenty. 20/20"- Matthew Jukes, matthewjukes.com.

"97 Points. The 2023 RunRig came from a cool, wet and late season, and the wine tastes so clearly both like RunRig and like 2023. It is savory and dense, powerful and concentrated, and the 1% Viognier (added, not co-fermented) contributes a gentle sway of flowers and dried apricots to the mix. This is a wonderful wine, one that ages with grace and ease. Last year, I did a vertical of the RunRig back to the first vintage, 1996, and the wine revealed itself to be sensitive to vintage variation yet true to its regional sourcing and identity. There is a suppleness to the mid-palate, that offers flavours of pomegranate as well as earthier characters. Fine tannin provides structural support, which leads, with length and directness, to a pleasing forest fruit and sour cherry finish. In addition, it is always cracking value. The blend of this vintage is 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Shiraz. This is fresh and fruit forward, and utterly delicious. It does not hurt that it comes from an absolutely brilliant vintage for the region. The colour is a shining blood red, while the nose reveals spices, blackberries, a flick of mint, bergamot, raspberries, cold tea and cherries.
