98 Points - Campbell Mattinson | Very Limited Stocks
Murdoch Hill is one of the most exciting wine producers in the Adelaide Hills; consistently producing stunning examples of the region's hero varietals. Nestled in the undulating hills of Oakbank, the Estate vineyards were planted by the Downer family in 1998.
A super-limited release with only 100 dozen produced, the 2022 Murdoch Hill's Orion Syrah represents the best of their 'Landau' block in their Oakbank vineyard in the Adelaide Hills. A result of a "freakishly good vintage", all grapes were hand-picked, 21 days on skins, 25% whole bunch, raised in 500-litre Stockinger puncheons (25% new) for 10 months.
The result is a high-toned, perfumed and intense Syrah, with reverberating power and striking freshness. It’s savoury, spicy and packed with blue fruits, balanced beautifully by silky density, composed acidity and precise, graphite-like tannins.
"98 Points. It's not often that such a detailed, delicate wine also comes with such depth. Indeed, this is a wine of gravitas. It's tight, smoky, ripped with mescal-like notes, peppery and just generally savoury, but there's also a gorgeous purr of berried fruit, ripe and settled. Along with all those spicy treble notes there's a good pound of mid-range bass. We're in classic beauty territory, balanced and complete. Give this wine some air; it needs it. And prepare to be mesmerised. $91. 13% alc. Drink: 2025 - 2035. Screwcap"- Campbell Mattinson, winecompanion.com.au.
