Torbreck continues to take advantage of dry-grown, old vines to make some of the Barossa's most demanded wines. The 2021 Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz is made from low-yielding vines throughout the Barossa Valley, namely the Marananga, Greenock, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal, Moppa, Lyndoch and Ebenezer sub-regions. All grapes were hand harvested, open fermented and gently basket pressed before being aged for 12 months in seasoned French oak.
As is the popular Woodcutter's style, this is all about freshness and bright fruit, with aromatic plum and raspberry notes leaping out of the glass. The palate is super approachable with a silky mouthfeel, while offering plenty of fruit intensity and weight with cassis, dark cherry and blueberry flavours supported by subtle spice. Another super Woodcutters Shiraz release from Torbreck, this will offer plenty of drinking pleasure over the next decade.
"96 Points Lovely ripened blackberries and raspberries. Al dente. Full-bodied yet so refined and focused with crisp acidity and ultra-fine, creamy tannins. Succulent and crunchy but focused and structured. Bright and purposeful. Drink after 2024 but already hard to hold back. Screw cap."- James Suckling, jamessuckling.com, October 2022.
"Goodness me, this is an awesome wine. I noted in my 100 Best Australian Wines 2022/23 Report that 2020 Woodcutter’s Shiraz was a gamechanger for Torbreck, and for a £25 wine, it is hard to think of another red wine made from this statesmanlike grape that comes close, but I am humbled by the sensational layering and presence of this extraordinary 2021 vintage. Much of the power and complexity sits right at the back of the experience, leaving a grand finish that reminds me of only a handful of epic St Joseph. Woodcutter’s is a fresh and long wine that gathers more structure and grip without ever including overt tannin or astringency. This is a standout Shiraz, not least if you desire a Torbreck experience with a budget price point. 18.5+/20 (Drink 2024 – 2030)"- Matthew Jukes, www.matthewjukes.com.
