95 Points - Campbell Mattinson
Frost Dodger is the flagship Shiraz made by Torzi Matthews from their Mt McKenzie vineyard in the Eden Valley. After a few years hiatus, the Frost Dodger Shiraz returns with the 2024 vintage; the 14th release of this limited release crafted via the traditional Italian 'appassimento' style dry racking.
All fruit for the 2024 Torzi Matthews Frost Dodger Shiraz were hand harvest from the estate single vineyard in the chilly surrounds of Mt McKenzie in the Eden Valley. Aged in 10% new French oak hogshead barrels with balance of 2nd fill French hogshead barrels for 14 months, this is bottled unfined and unfiltered.
The result is a generous, complex shiraz bursting with lovely aromatics, and plenty of intense black cherry and blue fruit flavour. With a nice underlying savouriness, wonderful fine tannin and loads of enjoyment, this is sure to be a hugely popular release from Torzi Matthews.
"95 Points. Talk about an absolute banger. The folks at Torzi Matthews have pulled out a ripper here. It’s so complex, so floral, so plush with dark fruit flavour and then so deeply satisfying through the finish. There’s no need for florid descriptors: this is structured, complex, meaty and more-ish at once. Done. This is Eden Valley Shiraz as a thing of wonder. $50, 14.5% alc. Screwcap, Eden Valley."- Campbell Mattinson, campbellmattinson.com.
"94 Points. Dark cherry, black fruit, dark mint chocolate, sage and spice. It’s full-bodied, supple yet firm, filled with sweet ripe black fruit, some raspberry, subtle biscuitty oak, balanced acidity, some orange peel and dried herb, has something of choc-ginger finish that offers excellent length. This is a strong release. Tasted: Jul25. 14.5% alc. $50 Screwcap. Drink: 2025 - 2034+"- Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
