Circe Wines is a partnership between Dan Buckle (current head winemaker at Domaine Chandon) and Aaron Drummond who met while working at Mount Langi Ghiran back in 2007. With a shared affection for their native Mornington Peninsula and Pinot Noir, Circe has developed a reputation for producing some of the region's most impressive examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The 2018 Circe Chardonnay is another beautifully weighted Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay, which strikes the seemingly perfect balance between crisp cool-climate fruit flavours and quality French oak. Plenty of bright grapefruit, citrus and pear fruit flavours are on offer with lively acidity providing a beautiful backbone, with the oak playing a support role. Another highly impressive Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay from Circe, which offers excellent value drinking at this price.
"94+ Points. I’m placing my bets on this one. It’s tight and reserved but it looks for all the world like it will develop into something special. It tastes of bran, fennel, malt, oyster shells, nashi pears and nectarines, all of which carry long through the finish. It’s a juicy chardonnay, built on acidity, with a distinct impression of purity, but it also manages to be inherently complex. It rocked me back on my heels a little. Tasted: Jun19 Alcohol: 12.5% Price: $40 Screwcap. Drink: 2020 - 2027+"- Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
With both growing up on the Mornington Peninsula, the duo were keen and curious as to what they could do with Pinot Noir from such great soil, shortly after Circe Wines was born.
While the highly regarded Dan Buckle is currently head winemaker for Domaine Chandon, he still finds time for his passion project, and the current vintages of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are certainly the most impressive Circe releases to date.
