Ashton Hill winemaker Stephen George in one of Australia's most skilful and versatile winemakers. Making powerful reds at Wendouree, he also produces some beautifully elegant Pinot Noir's at Ashton Hills. Ashton Hill Gamay is made from a small parcel from Woodside in the Adelaide Hills, which the team at Ashton Hills were fortunate enough to be offered.
The 2024 Ashton Hills Gamay opens with dark plum, fresh raspberry and blackberry aromas that leap from the glass, along with hints of rose petal and baking spice. The mix of fresh berries continues on the palate and is layered with subtle earthy notes, providing beautifully vibrant and complex flavours. The wine is framed with a crunchy acidity, while the use of seasoned oak and stainless steel for maturation keeps the wine tight and youthful.
"From a source in Woodside. Wild fermented and sees 20% whole bunches in that ferment. It's a juicy, bright, somewhat crisp red wine of refreshing red cherry, rosehip tea, maraschino cherry notes and pomegranate juice - all the crunchy red fruits. A touch of alpine herb, some salted licorice touches, a dash of white pepper. Really appealing, very primary fruited, super vibrant and somewhat elementary but great drinking overall. 92 Points. $50. 13.5% alc. Drink: 2025 - 2030. Screwcap"- Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion.
