Ata Rangi of New Zealand's Martinborough region has long been considered as one of the finest 'New World' Pinot Noirs, in fact their Estate Pinot Noir is widely regarded as the greatest example of the variety outside of Burgundy.
Ata Rangi Celebre always delivers an exceptional, high quality drinking red wine; this 2018 vintage is a blend of Merlot 47%, Syrah 41% and small portions of Malbec & Cabernet Franc at 6% each. Vibrant and concentrated, this has beautiful structure that should see if cellar for many years to come.
"94 Points. Excellent. A wine blended from Merlot, Syrah, Malbec & Cabernet Franc. Aromas of a complex and detailed wine with suggestions of plums and spice, dark olive and black berry, there’s a lovely floral scent adding a top-line of freshness then an earthy mineral and various shades of oak. On the palate - youthful, tense, vibrant and persistent. There’s power from the tannins and alcohol, medium+ acidity and a decent oak structure. The fruit provides the core with a persistent thread throughout the palate. Youthful, well made and long. Best drinking from 2023 through 2030. Decant for service before this time and serve with excellent protein rich fare." - Cam Douglas, www.camdouglasms.com.
One of the pioneers of the region, Clive Paton was one of the first to plant grapes on the Martinborough Terrace in 1980 and the winery has since gone on to become a legend of the New Zealand wine industry.
Home of the Gumboot clone of Pinot Noir, a cutting from the vineyards of Domaine de la Romanée Conti allegedly smuggled back into the country by an enterprising Kiwi in a pair of gumboots. In 2010 Ata Rangi was honoured with the 'Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa' award; New Zealand's equivalent of Grand Cru status.
Ata Rangi's head wine-maker Helen Masters consistently produces some of the finest 'new-world' Pinot Noir in the world, with Ata Rangi's Martinborough Pinot Noir having developed an international reputation for excellence while their Crimson consistently delivers exceptional value.
In addition to their sublime Pinot Noir, Ata Rangi also produce high quality Cabernets under their 'Celebre' release, with an impressive array of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay also complimenting the red wines of Ata Rangi.
