New Release | 97 Points - James Halliday
Balnaves The Tally represents the flagship wine of this family-owned winery in the heart of the famous Coonawarra region. The 2013 vintage of Balnaves The Tally is again a wonderful example of the lofty heights Coonawarra Cabernet is capable of reaching.
Deep rich red in colour, the nose is perfumed with perfectly ripened dark blackberry, liquorice and cassis fruit. The palate is firm and full bodied, with fleshy cassis and blackberry fruit. The finish is long and textured with fine grainy grape tannins. This wine showing the structure and completeness typical of 'The Tally'. Made to cellar with confidence, decant before drinking.
"97 Points. Hand-picked from a single vineyard; 40% long maceration on skins, matured for 20 months in new deluxe French chateau barriques (60% new). Deeply coloured, it is the quintessence of Coonawarra cabernet, with an immensely long palate, fruit, oak and tannins all contributing. Sometimes the oak on The Tally can seem too obvious in blind tastings with other top-flight cabernets, but it's hard to see that happening here. The drink-to date has been shortened by the decision to use ProCork. 14.5% alc. Drink by 2043. $105. ProCork" - James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au.
"96 Points. Bottled in December 2014. Pre-release. Looks wonderful. Thick cassis, violet, cedarwood, tobacco. Rows of muscular tannin. Length aplenty. That blend of dark fruit and bright boysenberried character as seen in the best of The Tally releases. Tremendous." - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
The vineyard is divided into small blocks of between one and two hectares, which take into account depth of soil, trellis design, vine clone and row direction. The quality of wine produced from these small blocks is evaluated each year and recorded. This practice proves the validity of the French concept of "terrior" or the effect that microclimate; geological features and other factors have on the quality of the wine produced. Such effects are clearly seen in the small Balnaves vineyard at Coonawarra.
