97 Points - James Halliday
Castle Rock is one of the stars of Western Australia's Great Southern region. The high altitude and exposure to south-east breezes results in a prolonged growing season and grapes of exceptional flavour intensity.
Made by the talented Rob Diletti, the 2020 Castle Rock Estate Porongurup Pinot Noir shows the lofty heights Great Southern Pinot Noir is capable of reaching. Plenty of cherry and strawberry flavours, this has a silky mouthfeel with the vibrant fruit in perfect balance with the quality French oak. A stunning Great Southern Pinot Noir that is well deserving of the attention it has been receiving.
"97 Points. Five clones, vines 20-35yo, multiple batch fermentations, 7-day cold soak, whole bunch, barrel ferment of final 3 baume for new French oak (28%), matured 15 months. Perfect colour; a great pinot at the dawn of its life; plum and cherry riddled with spice, char, violets and forest floor. Sophisticated and confident. 13.5% alc, screwcap drink to 2035, $38" - James Halliday, The Weekend Australian, August 21, 2021.
The vineyard is situated 40km north east of Albany and 30km south east of Mount Barker, on a cool and elevated northerly aspect. This results in well ripened cool climate varieties producing intensely flavoured wines.
