Circe Wines is a partnership between Dan Buckle (current head winemaker at Domaine Chandon) and Aaron Drummond who met while working at Mount Langi Ghiran back in 2007. With a shared affection for their native Mornington Peninsula and Pinot Noir, Circe has developed a reputation for producing some of the region's most impressive examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
This 2017 Circe Pinot Noir is another hugely impressive Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir from the Circe partnership. A bright, clean style of Pinot Noir with loads of vibrant red fruit flavours; cherry, raspberries and cinnamon are all on offer here. Complexity is added with around 60% whole-bunch pressed, and some well handled oak. A great drinking Circe Pinot Noir that is ready to be enjoyed now.
Mornington pinot from the Circe team. Lovely style of wine. Elegant. The flavour comes as a sheet, the acid chimes like a bell, the spice notes add the highlights. It’s not a wine of volume but it is a wine of refreshment and interest. It’s also reductive, though it cleans up with air. It could do with a little more ripeness and flavour, arguably but it still has plenty of charm. 92 Points Tasted: Jun19 Alcohol: 12.5% Price: $35 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2026+" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
With both growing up on the Mornington Peninsula, the duo were keen and curious as to what they could do with Pinot Noir from such great soil, shortly after Circe Wines was born.
While the highly regarded Dan Buckle is currently head winemaker for Domaine Chandon, he still finds time for his passion project, and the current vintages of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are certainly the most impressive Circe releases to date.
