In a relatively short period of time, Clos Clare has established itself as a benchmark Clare Valley Riesling makers. The 2019 Clos Clare Riesling is another superb release bursting with plenty of typical lime and lemon flavours that is supported by vibrant acidity on a beautiful lineal structure. Should provide plenty of drinking pleasure over the next decade.
"As the third generation of the Barry winemaking family, we now hold the keys to this boutique winery. Riesling is the Clare Valley's signature variety and this is our 12th vintage from clos Clare's Riesling patch, adjoining the historic 'Florita' vineyard in Watervale. The 49-year-old dry grown vines were hand-harvested and taken to The Wilson Vineyard at Polish Hill River, where they were chilled for 24 hours prior to whole bunch pressing and vinification. - Tom & Sam Barry, Clos Clare Wines.
"93 Points. Interesting to taste this alongside the 2019 Jim Barry Florita, which is just over the way from Clos Clare. Lime and lavender, a little earth and spice. It packs flavour and intensity, mixed citrus, something like thyme as a herbal counterpoint, crunch and grip, a primal rumbling intensity, lemon zest and spice on a good crunchy finish. It’s good and interesting. Tasted: Jan20. 12% alc. $30 Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2028+" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
The Barry family bought this property in 1986 from Leo Buring in which the fruit from this vineyard went into making the benchmark Leonay wine. When the Warilto Homestead was sub-divided including a small 45 year old 5 acre parcel of the vineyard to Ian Saunders, clos Clare was born and is now proudly the wines of the Barry brothers.
The Hayes vineyard is situated in the Amaragh Valley north west of the Clare township and as planted in 1975. Originally dry bush grown vines they are now trellised and run with Bio-Dynamic practices since 2007.
