This 2018 Clos Clare The Hayes Boy Grenache is an Australian Grenache of the highest quality, following in the footsteps of recent vintages of this wine that have proved hugely popular. Bright crimson red in the glass, it offers an abundance of bright red fruits on the nose; raspberry and cherry, roses and spice. The medium-bodied palate is incredibly approachable, with soft red fruit flavours and a fine tannin structure. Well deserving of the high praise it's already drawn, this is a super value Clare Valley Grenache.
"95 Points The making of this wine is a lesson in brevity that many could follow. Whole berry fermentation, 10 days on skins with the pressings returned and a short 6-month maturation in barrel. The result is all that is good with grenache, with none of the baggage. It's medium-bodied, vibrant purple-red, full of fragrant raspberry and black fruits, meshed with fine ever so slightly chalky tannins. Delicious wine." - David Bicknell, Halliday Wine Companion 2020.
The Barry family bought this property in 1986 from Leo Buring in which the fruit from this vineyard went into making the benchmark Leonay wine. When the Warilto Homestead was sub-divided including a small 45 year old 5 acre parcel of the vineyard to Ian Saunders, clos Clare was born and is now proudly the wines of the Barry brothers.
The Hayes vineyard is situated in the Amaragh Valley north west of the Clare township and as planted in 1975. Originally dry bush grown vines they are now trellised and run with Bio-Dynamic practices since 2007.
