Craiglee is one of the finest examples of cool-climate Shiraz produced in Australia and a wine that always draws plenty of attention. The 2016 Craiglee Sunbury Shiraz is the 40th vintage of Craiglee Shiraz, while also marking the 153rd anniversary of this legendary vineyard's founding in 1863.
A brilliant addition to any cellar, the 2016 vintage is aromatic and impeccably structured; the intensity of flavour, balance and lively bright fruit ensures this is a wine with a long life ahead of it.
"95+ Points. Epic shiraz showcasing the Australiana of the variety at its peak. Dark fruits, lavish spice, herbal-brambly notes, faintest whiffs of Aussie bush in eucalyptus and pepperberry and sweet earth, maybe some game meat (kangaroo?!) in the mix. A good, chunky weave of tannin through dark, brooding sluice of liquid berry and more spice, more herbal notes, more pepper, drawls out through a grippy, crushed rock and puckering finish. Originally established in the 1860's by one of Melbourne's founding fathers, James Johnston, Craiglee Vineyard was absent from the Australian wine landscape until it was replanted in 1976 by an enthusiastic agricultural science graduate called Pat Carmody.
Now one of Australia's most highly regarded and awarded wineries, Craiglee is still run with the loving attention of Pat and his wife Dianne (with the occasional input of sons Dave & Tom)
The flagship Craiglee Shiraz is listed in the Langton's Classification of Australian Wine VI with an Excellent rating - "Classic Australian wines of consistent Excellence".
