Cullen's Vanya Cullen was named 'Winemaker Of The Year' in the latest Halliday Wine Companion - deserving recognition of her remarkable contribution to this Margaret River winery, which is considered one of Australia's leading Cabernet makers.
This 2018 Cullen Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot is another impressive example from Vanya Cullen and her team; it displays densely flavoured ripe dark fruits complemented by subtle fine-grained tannins. Delicious drinking Margaret River Cabernet at a sensational price.
Reviews of the 2017 vintage below:
"96 Points. An 81/19% blend matured in French oak (30% new) for an average of 6 months. The colour is good, the bouquet expressive and very good, but it is the palate that really takes off, blackcurrant/cassis and bay leaf riding on a magic carpet of ripe tannins. This isn't the best wine in the Cullen line-up, but it arguably offers the best value. Screwcap. 12.7% alc. To 2037. $39" - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2020.
"93+ Points. Understated in the typical Cullen way, though it’s very much a wine that builds and reveals itself with time in glass, decanter, or cellar. Violet, boysenberry, nutty, slight leafy edge but ripe enough to deliver flavour, but with restraint. Medium bodied, dry insistent suede tannin, and a long finish with dark chocolate and tobacco trailing. Charming. Better again with a few years in the cellar. Tasted: Mar19 Alcohol: 12.5% Price: $45 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2021 - 2030+" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
The maritime climate of Margaret River allows a near perfect environment in which to grow the finest quality grapes. The rocky soils produce low yielding intensely flavoured grapes and the flavour of these grapes is what creates the fabric for the wine style at Cullen.
The vines are dry farmed, helping to ensure maximum fruit quality, and all pruning and harvesting are done by hand with great care. Quality is paramount and when the hand-harvested grapes arrive at the winery from the vineyard, they are sorted again to ensure that only the best goes into the bottle.
Biodynamic practices and minimal intervention apply to both vineyard and winery with all wines being naturally fermented.
As time passes, a greater understanding of the vineyard and grapes is gained and this makes possible the creation of a more individual wine style.
