96 Points - James Halliday | Last Stocks
Curly Flat has been one of our long-time favourite Australian Pinot Noirs and we've keenly observed the reputation of this Macedon Ranges winery continue to soar. The 2018 vintage marks the 21st vintage of Curly Flat Pinot Noir released and the first completed under the winemaking of Matt Harrop.
"96 Points. This is the main release from all parts of the vineyard. MV6, 115 and 114 clones, 20% whole bunch, 28 days on skins, matured for 16 months in oak (20% new). Fine, elegant and fragrant cherry and pomegranate fruit. Overall balance and length are very good. QED. Available in half-bottles and magnums as well as 750ml. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. To 2040. $53"- James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2021.
"95 Points. I believe this is the first vintage with Matt Harrop at the controls. I’m likely not recognized as the authority on Pinot Noir at The Wine Front, but I’ll do my best for you. Dried rose perfume in with some fresh mint, deep raspberry flavour, a little almond and vanilla, plus some spice. It’s ripe, but not overly so, with cool acidity, a dusting of graphite tannin, and a long biscuity finish. It’s generous in style, but keeps itself trim. I’m particularly tickled by the quality of tannin here. Excellent. Tasted: Mar20 13.5% alc. $53 Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2028+" Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
Jenifer and Phillip were determined to build quality in every aspect of their operation and they poured every resource into their 'baby', Curly Flat without compromise in the pursuit of excellence in wine quality with little or no regard to short-term or even medium-term return on investment.
As of late October 2017, Curly Flat is now owned and operated by Jenifer Kolkka along with Matt Harrop (ex Shadowfax) joining the team as Chief Winemaker to oversee the grape and wine production alongside our existing skilled team.
