96 Points - Bob Campbell MW
Dog Point Vineyard is situated in the Wairau Valley, the major grape growing region of New Zealand. It combines the considerable wine growing experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healy, formerly of the famous Cloudy Bay winery. The philosophy of Dog Point Wines is total involvement by the partners from the vineyard through the wine making process to marketing regionally distinctive and vineyard expressive wines.
This 2018 Dog Point Chardonnay is a ripe, citrus driven example with subtle biscuit, oatmeal and mild flinty notes on the nose. On the palate, Dog Points' hallmark fresh, vibrant acidity offered by the Mendoza Chardonnay clone offers vitality and vibrancy. A modest amount of new oak delivering subtle char and phenolic structure to the wine. An intensely flavoured yet youthful and lively vintage of Dog Point Chardonnay that has enormous appeal for Chardonnay lovers.
"96 Points Very stylish chardonnay with purity and power. Tangy, vibrant wine with citrus, green apple, oyster-shell, ginger and baguette crust flavours. A bright, youthful, high-energy wine that gives a nod in the direction of Burgundy."- Bob Campbell MW, The Real Review, 11 November, 2020.
"94 Points. A very worked chardonnay but the work done is very nice. Smoky flint scents, dash of cinnamon, juicy green apple characters, some frangipani floral notes too. Succulent, lightly chewy, more of the flint/wet pebble to taste, spice, ripe citrus, green apple. So much going on. Medium weight, courses with energy, so much chardonnay flavour and judicious seasoning. Bravo."- Mike Bennie, The Wine Front, 13 May, 2021.
The name Dog Point dates from the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. Shepherds' dogs sometimes became lost or wandered off and eventually bred into a marauding pack which attacked local flocks. Their home was a tussock and scrub covered hill, overlooking the Wairau Plains, designated by the early settlers as Dog Point.
Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable wine-growing experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and, James and Wendy Healy. Total involvement by the partners from the vineyard to the winemaking process through to the marketing of their regionally distinctive wines, ensures that Dog Point Vineyards remains a boutique and family oriented business producing wines with a clear point of difference.
Dog Point consistently deliver some of the Marlborough region's finest wines with their Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay always among the standouts. Dog Point's Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc is their barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc that usually sees around 18 months in older French oak; delivering a level of complexity and flavour intensity rarely achieved in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
