Over the past decade Dog Point Wines has established itself as one of New Zealand's leading wineries, with their Sauvignon Blanc consistently rated among the nation's finest. The 2019 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc is another brilliant example that combines the vibrancy, balance and underlying complexity that have made previous vintage so popular.
"95 Points. Intense, precise sauvignon blanc with grapefruit, citrus, subtle passionfruit and a suggestion of struck flint character. A powerful wine that’s long and linear, with strong varietal definition that’s made more interesting with a hint of reductive character."- Bob Campbell MW.
"94 Points. Dog Point something of a benchmark wine when it comes to NZ Sauvignon. It has some richness of tropical fruit, but tang of grapefruit and gooseberry too, slight spice of cut green capsicum, though ripeness of fruit is the main theme. It has intensity and crunchy, a quartz-y texture in with a light creamy silkiness, and the finish is tight, flinty and long, and very passionfruity, leaving just a little smokiness in its wake. Flavour and precision. Seems to be a very good vintage for this wine. 13.5% alc. $29 Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2025" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
The name Dog Point dates from the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. Shepherds' dogs sometimes became lost or wandered off and eventually bred into a marauding pack which attacked local flocks. Their home was a tussock and scrub covered hill, overlooking the Wairau Plains, designated by the early settlers as Dog Point.
Dog Point Vineyard combines the considerable wine-growing experience of Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and, James and Wendy Healy. Total involvement by the partners from the vineyard to the winemaking process through to the marketing of their regionally distinctive wines, ensures that Dog Point Vineyards remains a boutique and family oriented business producing wines with a clear point of difference.
Dog Point consistently deliver some of the Marlborough region's finest wines with their Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay always among the standouts. Dog Point's Section 94 Sauvignon Blanc is their barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc that usually sees around 18 months in older French oak; delivering a level of complexity and flavour intensity rarely achieved in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
