95 Points | Top 100 Wines of 2020 - James Halliday
Dominique Portet is one of the Yarra Valley's wineries, with their 'Fontaine' range of wines consistently delivering high quality at very reasonable prices. The 2019 Dominique Portet Fontaine Cabernet Sauvignon has drawn plenty of recent attention following its inclusion in Halliday's Top 100 Wines Of 2020.
A soft and medium-bodied example of Yarra Valley Cabernet, this offers plenty of plum and berry fruit flavours supported by lively fresh acidity and restrained oak. A lovely drinking Cabernet ideal for enjoying in the short to medium term, this is a relative bargain for a Yarra Cabernet.
"95 Points. Quite what a classy Yarra Valley cabernet-dominant blend (4/3/3/2% petit verdot/ malbec/ merlot/ cabernet franc) is doing at this price is beyond me. It is elegant, medium bodied and finely structured, the suite of red/blackcurrant fruits given 12 months in French oak (20% new). 13% alc. Drink by 2034. Screwcap"- James Halliday, Top 100 Wines of 2020.
Dominique Portet’s French lineage dates back to 1720 and the family’s sale of eaux de vie to the Martell family. Several generations later his father André Portet became régisseur (vineyard and winery manager) of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac.
