The Portet family boasts ten consecutive generations of winemaking that began in Bordeaux in the 18th century. Today, the Portet name is most closely associated with the Yarra Valley where father and son team Dominique and Ben Portet, respectively ninth and tenth generation winemakers, run their successful family winery.
The 2018 Dominique Portet Fontaine Cabernet Sauvignon is made of up 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec; all grapes we picked and sorted by hand. The grapes were then destemmed and gently crushed before fermenting them at relatively cool temperatures - in order to highlight the beautiful aromatics of the Cabernet. A soft and medium-bodied example of Yarra Valley Cabernet, this offers plenty of plum and berry fruit flavours, supported by some lively fresh acidity and restrained oak. A lovely drinking Cabernet ideal for enjoying in the short to medium term.
Dominique Portet’s French lineage dates back to 1720 and the family’s sale of eaux de vie to the Martell family. Several generations later his father André Portet became régisseur (vineyard and winery manager) of Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac.
