The Halls Gap vineyard in the Grampians has a long and revered history dating back to the 1960's. A long time grower for Seppelts and Penfolds, the vineyard was in the hands of the late Trevor Mast for many years, and in 2014 was acquired by Aaron Drummond. With a focus on Cabernet, Riesling and Shiraz, the single vineyard wines of Halls Gap Estate are labelled 'Fallen Giants' - a reference to the dreamtime stories about the creation of the mountains.
This 2018 Fallen Giants Shiraz is another incredibly impressive example of Grampians Shiraz from this label; beautifully structured, it hits the seemingly perfect balance between approachability and depth of flavour and complexity, with quality French oak playing a mere support role. A wine that's fast gaining a big following, this comes with our highest recommendation.
"Grampians shiraz. Beautiful vineyard. Name worth following. Another excellent release. These people are doing good things. This has that lovely combination of berried fruit flavour and fresh leather, and while it has peppercorn and cedarwood characters too they are background nuances only. It’s not a big wine but it’s insistent. Tannin comes sprinkled with garden herbs. I’m high silver, cusp of gold, but I could easily be talked up, and time will probably do that anyway. 93+ Points Tasted: Feb20. 14.5% alc. $30 Screwcap Drink: 2022 - 2030+" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
A long time grower Seppelts and Penfolds, in the mid 1990's the vineyard was acquired by the famed winemaker, the late, great Trevor Mast, and subsequently became a Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard. In 2014 it was purchased by Aaron Drummond (half of Circe Wines) and a new chapter commenced.
High elevation, old vines and ancient rocky soils have kept yields low but always delivered incredible quality. 23 acres under vine with a predominance of Shiraz, but a small paddock of old Riesling and Cabernet. The single vineyard wines of Halls Gap Estate are labelled 'Fallen Giants' in reference to the dreamtime stories about the creation of the mountains.
