Greywacke is the venture of Kevin Judd, former winemaker at Cloudy Bay for twenty five years and in the process established it as the world's most famous Sauvignon Blanc producer. The Greywacke wines are made by Kevin at Dog Point Winery in the lower Brancott Valley, a facility extended to him by long-standing friends and industry colleagues, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy.
Fermented entirely with naturally occurring yeast, the 2023 Greywacke Wild Sauvignon Blanc is an alternative style of sauvignon blanc that is both intricate and textural. A sweet-scented fusion of fragrant summer fruit and pastry shop perfume, peaches and nectarines, apple custard and lime meringues - all mingled with a dill-like herbal quality and a faint hint of wood smoke. The palate is fleshy and brimming with stone fruit and citrus, finishing crisp and juicy with a long, flinty dryness.
"Openly aromatic with both classic Sauvignon Blanc fruit - grassy and herbal with a hint of cassis leaf - but also a creamy/mealy impression allied to a stony note. Unusual combination of creamy and mineral with the merest hint of oak spice. Lovely texture from the lees and the oak, gently chewy, rich, still very youthful and fresh and with a salty aftertaste. This is a wine that you can enjoy now but which ages very well. 17.5 Points"- Julia Harding MW, Jancisrobinson.com.
"One of the country’s top reserve sauvignons, Greywacke’s textural example counterpoises its ripe green plum fruit with vibrant lemon and lime acidity. A savoury herbal character is joined by a touch of smoke, spice and struck flint. 50 Best bottles from NZ Wineries"- Jo Burzynska, Viva's NZ Wine Awards.
