97 Points - Patrick Eckel
Established in 1988 in Denmark, Western Australia, Harewood Estate was purchased by former Howard Park winemaker, James Kellie in 2003. We've been hugely impressed with some of Harewood Estate's wines in recent years with their Rieslings particular standouts.
This 2019 Harewood Porongurup Riesling has typically fine floral and citrus notes enhanced by an underlying flinty vibrancy. The palate is supremely elegant and crisp with flavours of green apple, grapefruit, mouth-watering lemons and limes and a subtle underlying slate character. An exceptional Riesling that underlines why many regard Great Southern as Australia's leading premium Riesling region.
"97 Points. A lightly Golden colour in the glass; The nose has citrus blossom, lime, a touch of jasmine and wet slate; all you could want for in a Riesling. There is a chalky minerality to the wine and a nervy baseline of acidity that is exhilarating, fruit sits on the fresh lime side of the citrus spectrum with an interlude of white flowers and green apple. The quality and impact of this wine is truly impressive for the price. Optimal Drinking: 2019 - 2030. 12.5% alc. Screwcap" - Patrick Eckel, winereviewer.com.au
"96 Points. Perhaps the most delicate of the single vineyard Harewood Rieslings from this release, but it comes at no expense to intensity. Sweet citrus, apple and lemon barley water are the themes on the bouquet, and the palate is an exercise in perfect balance, the fruit flavours finding their way all around the mouth but held in a web of taut acidity. Screwcap. 12.5% alc. To 2034. $30"- Steven Creber, Halliday Wine Companion 2021.
James Kellie prides himself on delving into the true expression of the Great Southern’s sub-regions of Denmark, Porongurup, Frankland River and Mount Barker using grape varietals such as Riesling, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. As Harewood Estate says, “The art is on the inside” of every bottle.
The fruit is sourced from select, low yielding vineyards from each sub-region to produce cool climate wines James Halliday refers to as “Wines of exemplary quality and typicity.”
