JJ Hahn is a result of a partnership with popular winemaker Rolf Binder and the Hahn family who have been growing grapes in the Barossa since 1845. JJ Hahn are known for producing consistently high quality reds and great price.
This 2023 JJ Hahn Western Ridge 1975 Plantings Shiraz is another brilliant Barossa Shiraz. A single vineyard Shiraz sourced from the Rolf Binder estate on the Barossa’s Western Ridge sub region, this shows off the richness of old vine Barossa Shiraz. With layers of ripe concentrated red fruit characters mixed with elements of minerals and ironstone drawn up from the roots driving deep into the sandy red loam soils.
"A blend of vineyards in Marananga, Stone Well and Seppeltsfield, matured in a 50/50 split of French and American oak, 20% new for 18 months. Deep crimson with notes of meaty blackberry, blood plum and black cherry fruits. Hints of brown spice, dark chocolate, dried and hanging meats, pressed wildflowers, oak-derived wood spice and turned earth. Full bodied and traditionally framed, with meaty dark fruits, fine, sandy tannins and a medium-length finish. 93 Points. 14.5% Alc, Drink 2026-2041."- Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion.
"The fruit here is sourced from the team’s Western Ridge vineyards, including Greenock, Stone Well, Marananga and Seppeltsfield. They also use 5% whole bunches in the fermentation. Maturation is for a year and a half in a mix of American and French oak hogsheads, 20% of which is new. Deep garnet in hue, this is a big and bold Barossa Valley Shiraz, with aromas weaving through notes of mushrooms, chocolate, black fruits, licorice, coffee grinds and dried herbs. Ripe flavours throughout, there is an expressive palate with a sleek texture through to very fine tannins. A wine of excellent length, enjoy this over the next decade. 93 Points. Drink 2026-2036."- Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot.
