Established in 1890, the iconic Kay Brothers Amery winery is one of Australia's most historically significant wineries - utilising many of the same practices it did during its formative years. Remarkably this McLaren Vale treasure remains in the founding family hands, with Colin Kay currently at the helm.
Kay Brothers have long produced one of Australia's best examples of Grenache and the 2018 Basket Pressed Grenache is another top-line example. Densely flavoured with plenty of juicy red berry fruit flavours, it has soft velvety tannins and refreshing acidity - great drinking in the short to medium-term.
"93 Points. Falls to spicy and nutty as much as fruity. Ripe raspberry, slight minty and rosy perfume in the mix too. It’s mid-weight, supple and spicy, smooth but persistent tannin, even acidity, a good long dry finish, all hazelnut and rich red fruits, that tannin drawing it tight like velvet curtains. Tasted: Aug19 Alcohol: 14.5% $28. Screwcap Drink: 2019 - 2026+" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
Established in 1890, Kay Brothers Amery is one of Australia's winemaking treasures. Remarkably this McLaren Vale icon is still in founding family hands with Colin Kay continuing to produce some of South Australia's finest red wines.
Kay's are specialist traditional red wine makers utilising grapes from their own 22-hectare Amery Vineyard. The grape varieties grown are Shiraz (including the 1892 Block 6 Shiraz), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Grenache, Mourvedre (Mataro) and Muscat Blanc.
Colin Kay's winemaking philosophy is to make rich fullbodied fruit-driven wines (using the original Open Fermenters and Basket Press) with small oak cask maturation.
"My Top 20 Producers. Kay Brothers Amery makes some of the world’s most impactful, authentic Shiraz; Block 6 (planted in 1892) is Australia’s most amazing single-vineyard. The winery, headed by Colin Kay, is ancient and wine styles haven’t changed in more than a century - this is one property in perfect harmony with its site and soil.”- Matthew Jukes, Decanter Magazine, April 2010.
