Established in 1890, the iconic Kay Brothers Amery winery is one of Australia's most historically significant wineries - utilising many of the same practices it did during its formative years. Remarkably this McLaren Vale treasure remains in the founding family hands, with Colin Kay currently at the helm.
In a style inspired by the French Rhone Valley, the 2022 Kay Brothers Amery GSM brings together three grape varieties - Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro. A blend that marries together the distinguishing characteristics of each variety, where Grenache provides the lifted fruit and freshness; Shiraz adds rich fruit intensity and Mataro the tannin structure. Made using their traditional wine making approach, including open top fermentation, gentle hand-plunging and basket pressing to preserve the delicacy and vibrancy has made for a characterful, medium-bodied wine bursting with red berry, spice, and earthy aromas.
"92 Points. This is a bright expression of the Southern Rhône-inspired blend, with lifted red fruits - raspberry, cherry, sour plum – a floral hint, musk, cinnamon and some subdued earthiness. Presently, the cool tannins and apparent acidity are prominent, but time will no doubt bring the structure into focus. There’s good potential here. $39. 14% alc. Drink: 2024 - 2027.
