Established in 1890, the iconic Kay Brothers Amery winery is one of Australia's most historically significant wineries - utilising many of the same practices it did during its formative years. Remarkably this McLaren Vale treasure remains in the founding family hands, with Colin Kay currently at the helm.
Only made in years deemed worthy, the 2021 Kay Brothers Cuthbert Cabernet Sauvignon in only the 10th release of this commemorative flagship Cabernet made at Kay Brothers. Open fermented, basket pressed and aged in new French and Bulgarian oak for twenty months, this is a McLaren Vale Cabernet with surprising approachability; combining rich, vibrant fruit with great structure and well-handled oak.
"Grapes picked on the 24th of March, basket pressed, raised in French hogsheads. 638 six packs produced. Fresh blackberry and mulberry, oyster shell, cedar, aniseed, black olives, choc-hazelnut. It’s medium-bodied, acidity is pretty fresh, kind of spritely with a fresh blackberry tang, but does give the wine a certain shape and energy. It’s fresh in fruit, but also has distinctly savoury with flavours of black olive and dark tobacco, a dense and compact, almost smoky feel to the chalky tannin (don’t mind me), and a bright finish of fine length and grip. Always such a distinctive wine of place, and no change here. 93+ Points Tasted: Sep23 13% alc. $49 Screwcap Drink : 2026 - 2038+"- Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
