Established in 1890, the iconic Kay Brothers Amery winery is one of Australia's most historically significant wineries - utilising many of the same practices it did during its formative years. Remarkably this McLaren Vale treasure remains in the founding family hands, with Colin Kay currently at the helm.
Only made in years deemed worthy, the 2017 Kay Brothers Cuthbert Cabernet Sauvignon in only the 8th release of this commemorative flagship Cabernet made at Kay Brothers. Open fermented, basket pressed and aged in new French and Bulgarian oak for twenty months, this is a McLaren Vale Cabernet with surprising approachability; combining rich, vibrant fruit with great structure and well-handled oak.
"94 Points. McLaren Vale Cabernet, as I so often say, is much better than its reputation. Perhaps that’s why I feel an affinity for it… Blueberry, chocolate, toasted hazelnut, cedar and aniseed. It’s plump and plush, sweetly red and black fruited with layers of fine powdery tannin, some tobacco and earth, and a solid and satisfying finish. Tasted: Oct19 13.8% alc. $49 Screwcap" - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
Established in 1890, Kay Brothers Amery is one of Australia's winemaking treasures. Remarkably this McLaren Vale icon is still in founding family hands with Colin Kay continuing to produce some of South Australia's finest red wines.
Kay's are specialist traditional red wine makers utilising grapes from their own 22-hectare Amery Vineyard. The grape varieties grown are Shiraz (including the 1892 Block 6 Shiraz), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Viognier, Grenache, Mourvedre (Mataro) and Muscat Blanc.
Colin Kay's winemaking philosophy is to make rich full bodied, fruit-driven wines (using the original Open Fermenters and Basket Press) with small oak cask maturation.
