Longhop is the impressive partnership of Domenic Torzi and Tim Freeland; designed to showcase what the Adelaide Plains and adjoining Mt Lofty Ranges regions does best. Sourcing precious old vine "survival plantings" of the 1950's coupled with a non-interventional approach to winemaking, the wines of Longhop are always generously flavoured and packed with personality.
This 2020 Longhop Merlot is another red wine delivering an approachable and aromatic example of Merlot. The palate is well weighted and offers an abundance of blackberry, dark chocolate and mocha flavour. Another super value red wine from the Longhop range that has wide appeal.
"A new wine from Longhop, and a Barossa Valley Merlot, no less. Chocolate, hazelnut, dried herbs, mocha and vanilla, black fruit. It’s thick and full-bodied, dried raspberry and chocolate, a pleasant bitterness to it, thick tannin, plenty of chew and grip, and a panforte spicy finish of good length. Interesting. Bold. Strangely attractive. I like it. 91 Points Tasted: Nov21 14.5% alc. $20 Screwcap Drink: 2021 - 2027"- Gary Walsh, The Wine Front.
Longhop is the impressive partnership of Domenic Torzi and Tim Freeland. The former Gawler high school mates seized upon an idea in 2002 of salvaging some of the last remaining old vine vineyards in the Adelaide Plains and making icon wines from that region.
Vineyards were secured, old vines a priority. Their small band of growers have embraced the ideal of delivering premium grapes in order to showcase the power and rich fruit flavours the Adelaide Plains and adjoining Mt Lofty Ranges has to offer.
The wines are made with minimal intervention and tradition techniques; open fermented and basket pressed. No fining or filtration is used prior to bottling.
