95 Points - James Halliday
Devil’s Elbow Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced entirely from Longview’s vineyard at Macclesfield, Adelaide Hills. The fruit was hand-picked to minimise fruit damage, then fermented on skins for 7 days. After malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in old and new French Oak Barriques for 24 months.
This 2017 vintage of Longview Devils Elbow Cabernet Sauvignon is another top class Adelaide Hills Cabernet Sauvignon; rich purple and violet in colour, with aromas of blackcurrant, clove, mint and spiced dark cherry. It has toasty oak characters, perfectly balanced tannin and a long clean finish. While drinking great now, this will undoubtedly cellar very well for the next decade.
"95 Points. Always a star performer, Devil's Elbow is consistently blessed each vintage with energy and life that you can taste. Black and red soused berries, baked earth, leather, warm spice. Reveals some savoury influences, grainy tannins and a touch of rusticity that all adds up. Keeps you coming back for more. Screwcap. 14% alc. To 2031. $30." - Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion 2021.
Longview is located on the South Eastern Ridge of the Mt Lofty Ranges and to the south has the southern ocean and to the east Lake Alexandrina. This accounts for a slightly higher average temperature than the rest of the Adelaide Hills while still remaining a cool-climate site. Most rainfall occurs in winter and throughout summer warm days are followed by cool winds shifting from the southern waters of Lake Alexandrina and the coast. Consequently these conditions result in a very high diurnal range which is quite site specific, ensuring a breadth of flavours and aromatics in the grape berry.
Longview wines are all from its single estate and therefore much of the work to provide depth and character is completed in the vineyard. Each block is serviced differently, in order to build complex flavour profiles which are then fermented separately and blended to make the wine of any one vintage. With a site perfect for Macclesfield’s unique micro-climate, Longview Vineyard produces exceptional fruit for graceful cool climate wines.
Longview's Yakka Shiraz has become synonymous for high quality Adealaide Hills Shiraz, as has their Whippet Sauvignon Blanc, which is always one of the leading examples from the Adelaide Hills. Other standouts from Longview are their high quality Cabernet Sauvignon while in recent times the 'KUHL' Gruner Veltliner has marked itself as one of Australia's most promising examples of this native Austrian white wine variety.
