"95 Points. Matured for 15 months in new and used French hogsheads. A most attractive wine that has taken full advantage of the '17 vintage, with its finesse, length and elegance. The red and black cherry/berry fruits intermingle with notes of spice and oak. The balance and length of this medium-bodied wine can't be faulted. Screwcap. 14% alc. To 2037. $30. Special Value" - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2021.
"95 Points. A delicious Hills shiraz that drinks well young and has what it takes to cellar for quite a few years. There are chocolate, vanilla, blackberry aromas and the palate adds some meaty charcuterie notes while delivering power and concentration. A very smart shiraz" - Huon Hooke, Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, Feb/ March 2020.
"92 Points. The Yakka vineyard has been a good performer over the years. Good heft this year. It almost makes it feel a little old school. Toast and vanilla characters, maybe even coffee-cream, melt into asphalt, black cherry and roasted plum. The smooth face of hearty. Firm with tannin too. A substantial red. Tasted: Nov19. 14% alc. $30 Screwcap Drink: 2020 - 2028+" - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
Longview is located on the South Eastern Ridge of the Mt Lofty Ranges and to the south has the southern ocean and to the east Lake Alexandrina. This accounts for a slightly higher average temperature than the rest of the Adelaide Hills while still remaining a cool-climate site.
Most rainfall occurs in winter and throughout summer warm days are followed by cool winds shifting from the southern waters of Lake Alexandrina and the coast. Consequently these conditions result in a very high diurnal range which is quite site specific, ensuring a breadth of flavours and aromatics in the grape berry.
Longview wines are all from its single estate and therefore much of the work to provide depth and character is completed in the vineyard. Each block is serviced differently, in order to build complex flavour profiles which are then fermented separately and blended to make the wine of any one vintage. With a site perfect for Macclesfield’s unique micro-climate, Longview Vineyard produces exceptional flavoursome, graceful cool climate wines.
Longview's Yakka Shiraz has become synonymous for high quality Adelaide Hills Shiraz, as has their Whippet Sauvignon Blanc, which is always one of the leading examples from the Adelaide Hills. Other standouts from Longview are their high quality Cabernet Sauvignon while in recent times their Gruner Veltliner has marked itself as one of Australia's most promising examples of this native Austrian white wine variety.
