Very Limited Stocks | 96 Points - Huon Hooke
Planted in 1969 and with their first vintage in 1973; Moss Wood is an important, founding estate of the Margaret River wine region. Winemakers and owners Keith and Clare Mugford have been making wine and tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since the late 1970's and continue to make some of Margaret River's finest wines; their Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay always standouts.
The 2019 Moss Wood Chardonnay is another complex, impeccably structured and powerful rendition of Margaret River Chardonnay that follows in the footsteps of highly praised recent vintages. A wine that's already attracting plenty of interest, our very limited remaining stocks will not last long.
"96 Points. Mid to light-yellow colour, with creamy buttery aromas, some honey starting to appear, the palate generous and almost opulent - as the bouquet leads us to expect. Rich, full-bodied, layered with flavour. A traditional Burgundy-style chardonnay with lots of everything. Finishes with some alcohol warmth. Complex, multi-dimensioned and very generous."- Huon Hooke, The Real Review, November 2020.
"94 Points. The big mover at Moss Wood in recent years has been their chardonnay. In the last five years it is a wine that has edged closer and closer to the pinnacle of Margaret River in a power-packed style and the 2019 vintage is another impressive release. It is pale gold in colour and ripples with bright tangerine and citrus fruits with hazelnut barrel ferment combined with what is at the moment overt French oak maturation. The palate is then dry and juicy - again its concentration and toasty oak are the key features. But underneath there is also some subtlety - faint floral elements and praline adding to the overall package that finishes with impressive length. It is a big chardonnay style that just needs a couple of years for the oak to retreat after which it will drink very well over the medium term."- Angus Hughson, Wine Pilot, December 2020.
With a dedication to making hand-made wines that cellar gracefully, Moss Wood has for decades, won acclaim as a prestige producer and continues to do so.
Planted in 1969 with its first vintage in 1973, Moss Wood is located in the sub-region of Wilyabrup. Selected for the suitability of its soils, aspect and consistent climate, it is one of the finest vineyard sites in Australia.
Keith Mugford, as chief winemaker and co-proprietor, has been making wine and tending the vineyard at Moss Wood since 1979. He was joined in this by his wife Clare, in 1984. They seek and apply proven knowledge and technology to enhance grape and wine quality, constantly driving to be the best. This exacting viticulture and winemaking ensures wines of outstanding quality, distinguished by their consistency over many vintages.
Over time, the success of Moss Wood led the Mugfords to purchase a second property, Ribbon Vale, in 2000. This Wilyabrup, dry grown vineyard, is only 1200 metres from their original estate.
The Moss Wood and Mugford names are synonymous with uncompromising quality; their relentless and constant goal is to produce the perfect fruit and flawless great wine.
