New Release | 94 Points - Mike Bennie
One of Australia's true winemaking treasures, Mount Mary was a key driver in the rebirth of the Yarra Valley in the early 1970's after nearly 50 years without viticultural activity. Today, in the words of James Halliday, "its star shines brighter than that of any of the 174 wineries in the valley".
Mount Mary's Réflexion wines are made entirely from Mount Mary estate grown fruit, primarily from youngest plantings. The fruit grown on these vines is still developing towards the quality and consistency demanded for Mount Mary Vineyard estate wines, in this case their flagship Quintet Cabernet blend.
Made using the same meticulous winemaking techniques used for Quintet components, the just released 2023 Mount Mary Reflexion Cabernets is made up of a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Merlot. Opening with lifted aromatics of cherry, plum, and redcurrant, the palate is taut, sleek, and finely structured, delivering flavours of cherry and blackcurrant layered with subtle sweet spice and smoky nuances that add complexity. A fresh, vibrant and extremely approachable Yarra Valley Cabernets, this is an ultra impressive release from Mount Mary that is sure to sell out fast.
“94 Points. A kind of ‘baby Quintet’ is the gist. Ready to drink, also the idea. Per se. From a blend of 85% cabernet sauvignon, 10% cabernet franc and 5% merlot. Magnificent perfume, blue fruits, lavender, dried Italianate herbs, new leather, white pepper and choc mint. More of the same to taste with an attractive puddle of plum compote, dried fig and juicy, black cherry in the mix. Sloshes around the palate with visceral pleasure, a looser knit red with lusty flavour and yet a coolness underlying. Big glasses, fire side and getting lost in something else, but the wine as a backdrop. I can see it now. Date: Jun 2024. 13% alc. $65. Diam. Drink: 2025-2033.”- Mike Bennie, The Wine Front.
