Dave Powell is a Barossa legend, having cut his teeth at Rockford before founding Torbreck in 1994, the label that defined a whole era of Barossa Shiraz. He now owns Neldner Road; a return, by his own account, to the instincts that shaped his earliest and best work.
The 2021 Neldner Road Chatterton’s Shiraz is 100% Shiraz drawn from both the Eden Valley and the Barossa Valley, off vines 100+ years old grown on brown loams over ironstone and dark schists over clay. The fruit is fermented in open-top concrete vats with twice-daily pump-overs, then basket pressed. Wild malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, with the wine matured in predominantly new French oak barriques for 24 months prior to bottling without fining or filtration.
"96 Points. Inky black in the glass. Lifted aromas of stewed plum, mulberry, cocoa powder, sweet spice, chocolate pudding and blackberry pastilles. Mouth-filling, super-concentrated and plush in flavour, with lashings of dark fruits, oak and spice. The tannins are granular and shapely and the acidity brings some ping to the party.”- Aaron Brasher, The Real Review
"96 Points. The stunning 2021 Shiraz Chatterton’s is made with fruit from six vineyards over 100 years old and delivers precise and pure kaleidoscopic aromas of blackberry, baked earth, game and roasted spice. The palate is then linear and seamless, with a powerful yet tight core of flavor supported by a genuine tannic grip. It is fascinating and beautifully crafted, and it will be a pleasure to see it unfold over the next two decades.”-Angus Hughson, Vinous.
