96 Points - Jane Faulkner | RRP $75
The name Penley Estate comes from the amalgamation of two pioneering South Australian wine families; the Penfolds and Tolleys. Born of a dream of three siblings in 1988, today Penley Estate is firmly entrenched as one of Coonawarra finest wineries.
The 2018 Penley Estate Chertsey is a classic 'Bordeaux-style' blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Deliciously approachable, this leaps out of the glass with aromas of raspberry, violets and ripe cherry notes. The palate is very approachable with raspberry, roasted coffee and dark chocolate flavours seamlessly blending in with fine tannin and well-measured oak. A premium Coonawarra red of wide appeal, this is a relative bargain at this heavily discounted price.
"96 Points. A 3-way bet of 70/20/10% cabernet sauvignon/merlot/cabernet franc. They must be magic numbers, because this is an enchanting outcome. The aromas are like perfume: all floral, blackberries and exotic spices. But it is the palate that really puts on the charm. Medium bodied, exquisite tannins and vivacious, yet elegant throughout. $75. 14% alc. Drink: 2033."- Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion 2022.
