95 Points - James Halliday
Red Claw is an impressive range of wines made by the Mornington Peninsula's Yabby Lake; a winery known for crafting some of the region's finest examples of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
With intense complex aromas and great depth of character, Red Claw's no nonsense approach to viticulture and winemaking is clearly visible in this 2019 Red Claw Pinot Noir. A fine long juicy palate with a persistent polished finish, this is bursting with cherry and dark fruits flavours. Pinot Noir drinkers will find a lot to like about this smashing release from the team at Yabby Lake.
"95 Points. Hand picked and sorted, open-fermented with 25% whole bunches, matured in used French puncheons. Bright crimson-purple; the fragrant bouquet weaves a tapestry of red berry blossom with a darker note picked up on the complex palate and its long finish. $30. 14% alc. Drink by 2029. Screwcap" - James Halliday, Top 100 Wines 2020.
Yabby Lake Vineyard was established by the Kirby family in 1998, in Tuerong, which is located in the northern part of the Mornington Peninsula. Over the past decade, Yabby Lake has built a reputation for single vineyard Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of great purity and character.
Led by the highly regarded winemaker Tom Carson, Yabby Lake's philosophy is to craft wines that speak of their site and their season in which they were grown. Yabby Lake believe it’s this attention and care in the vineyard that is most critical to allowing this expression.
