Seppelt Drumborg Riesling is widely rated amongst the finest Australian Rieslings. Located 30 kilometres north-west of Portland, Victoria, the Drumborg vineyard is one of the coolest vineyards of mainland Australia. 2021 Seppelt Drumborg Riesling is another top-line example of Drumborg's ability to produce flavoursome, elegant, yet an intensely focused style of Riesling.
"97 Points. Many of the greatest wines in the world show themselves from day 1. Power, balance and complexity leap from the glass to illustrate sensational quality. This is one of those wines and a good sign for cool climate Victorian riesling from the 2021 vintage. Pale in colour this wine instantly impresses with its brightness and purity with orchard fruit aromas of pear and apple lifted by a chalky, floral and spicy lift. It’s not shy at all but also the aromas are compact and concentrated showing a wine that is built for the long term. That is followed by a pristine palate that is dry and crisp, yet also has great texture too. It is is far away from the lean, acid driven riesling style with its mouth filling, silky fruits. But the acidity is still there and it underlies a beautifully long and slightly salty finish. It’s a superb Australian riesling that is already drinking beautifully but will also reward time hidden away in a cool, dark cellar. $40. Drink: 2021 - 2038"- Angus Hughson, winepilot.com.
"96 Points. A rush of florals opens the bouquet, all white flowers and citrus blossom. So welcoming, as is the lemony-grapefruit freshness, lime zest, musk and orange peel. It’s the scent of spring. Drumborg riesling is traditionally low in alcohol – 11% here – which makes the wine’s textural pleasure all the more astounding. Or, maybe not. Clare Dry admits to introducing a few “different” winemaking techniques to this wine such as whole bunch pressing, and employing different levels of solids from the grape skins and pulp in the fermentation. It works beautifully on a number of levels, elevating what is usually an arms-and-legs kind of youthfulness - it was only bottled at the end of May - into something that arrives in the glass fully-formed and complex. Ultimately, this is a riesling to excite. It is also a riesling that stays true to past Drumborg releases and the joy many feel about Henty riesling in general. You could write a book about the sheer juiciness of Henty’s cool climate, natural-born acidity. The mouth waters, literally. The 2021 Drumborg riesling is all round long, intense, lip-smackingly good. $40. Drink: 2021 - 2036" - Jeni Port, winepilot.com.
